Say Hello! to our new dog, "Lucky"!

Picture 01 Now, THIS is a glamour boy!  Not that I take good pictures (I do), but is this a photogenic dog, or what?!  His latest visit to the vet has him in the peak of health, and sporting a new microchip, so he'll never go unidentified again.  Not that I'm complaining about the last time; if he hadn't gone astray, he'd never have come to join our family - and we intend to see he stays that way!!

And folks, let me point you in the right direction:

AVID Canada    Manufacturer of microchips
GetMeHome.ca  Merial's pet recovery website

To us, it's all the comfort in the world (literally - wait 'till you find out how wide-ranging the database coverage is!)  It's a small cost to ensure your pet can be readily identified and returned to you, no matter where you go.  And it's so important that some humane societies are doing it as a matter of course, and integrating the cost into the adoption fees.  Please consider it for your pet - can you imagine losing a pet this adorable?

Picture 02 Folks, this is Lucky.  Lucky, say Hi to the...  Lucky?  Lucky?!  Come get your head out of the bowl and say Hi!

Lucky came to us on 4 April 2002, from the Peterborough Humane Society, as an already-neutered 3-year-old male Lhasa Apso cross (supposedly, but opinions run high that he's purebred - not that it matters to us at all!)
Picture 03 That's better!  Did you get enough dinner?

It's also rumored that he became a "stray" after being "lost" by an owner who could no longer care for him.  More's the pity, because he's as perfect a dog as we could possibly have hoped for, and then some.  Wonderful temperament, great around the kids and us, very well-adjusted and intelligent.  He's quite obviously been very well cared for up to the time he became a "stray".
Picture 04 Now, there's a glamour boy if I ever saw one!

His first visit to the vet told the bulk of the story.   Fundamentally perfect condition, bright and healthy, and we found out that the coughing or huffing sound he makes actually *IS* his "in-the-house" bark!  It's hilarious!  And we learned that his breed does display some serious territorial and protective aggression, which explains why he so quickly charged Fred and Toby next door!
Picture 05 Hey!  HEY!!  Wake up, you!  No sleeping on the job!

Apparently, Lhasa Apsos have no compunctions about challenging anything - Shepherds, Labs, Great Danes...  And he has!  So I've been very entertained by his - shall we say? - 'marking' and scuffing/scratching along Fred & Toby's fence intent on dominating the world, I guess, one backyard at a time!  What a hoot! <^8#
Picture 06 Who locked the door?!  You can't stop me that easily!

And, he's decided he likes Daddy best, and this is him intent on getting into the bathroom to be with me.  After a couple of VERY short-term false starts throughout my life, THIS basically constitutes my first dog, and I couldn't be more thrilled!  Until he shows me another new trick...!
Picture 07 Our earliest picture of Lucky!

This was Megan's first picture using her new camera, and she got the drop on the rest of us - this picture shows Lucky getting a drink of water in one of our soup bowls, 'cuz we hadn't been to the pet store yet!  (And *MY* apologies for the poor picture quality - I forgot to rewind the film before opening the back of the camera!)

And since Lucky's come to live with us, he's shown a very rapid ability to learn "come", "shake a paw", and to catch & retrieve a tennis ball, all with a happy smile on his face.  And Daddy's teaching him to "heel", "sit", and "stay", though these are going to be somewhat harder to ingrain, since every time he sees another dog, he goes into aggressive mode and runs directly toward their space.  I'm happy to say, though, that he hasn't displayed any desire to start fights yet, but he's demonstrated a couple of times that he's only too ready to defend himself or us, if he senses any threats (real OR imagined, I'd say, and up to now I'd say it's been all in his imagination.)
